Sponge fabric is a material made from a high-molecular polymer matrix through a foaming process, possessing both flexibility and a porous structure. Its performance largely depends on the selection and proportion of the base material. Understanding the main material types helps in achieving precise material selection and performance optimization in different application scenarios.

Currently, the most common sponge fabric materials in the industry can be divided into three major systems: polyurethane, polyvinyl alcohol, and natural fiber composites. Among them, polyurethane sponge fabric is the most widely used. It is produced by the reaction of isocyanate and polyol, and has the characteristic of adjustable closed-cell or open-cell structure. Closed-cell type has a dense texture, good resilience, and strong resistance to compression deformation, and is often used in areas where high support is required, such as seat cushions and packaging cushioning. Open-cell type has good pore connectivity and outstanding liquid absorption and breathability, and is commonly used in applications requiring rapid penetration and release, such as cleaning and wiping materials, filter materials, and medical dressings.

Polyvinyl alcohol sponge fabric uses polyvinyl alcohol as the main raw material and is formed through cross-linking foaming. It has the characteristics of strong hydrophilicity and good biocompatibility. This material expands rapidly upon contact with water while maintaining a soft touch, exhibiting a gentle and low-irritant advantage in scenarios such as medical cleaning, precision instrument wiping, and cosmetic removal. It is also easily biodegradable, aligning with the trend of green materials development.

Natural fiber composite sponge fabric combines cotton, linen, bamboo fiber, and other materials with a polymer foam, balancing environmental friendliness and mechanical performance. Natural fibers provide excellent breathability and a skin-friendly feel, while the elasticity and cushioning of the foam layer make it suitable for applications requiring high comfort and health, such as infant products, high-end home furnishings, and eco-textiles. During processing, the uniformity of fiber dispersion and interfacial bonding strength must be controlled to ensure the stability of the finished product.

Furthermore, some special-purpose sponge fabrics incorporate acrylate, rubber, or silicone-based modified components to enhance oil resistance, heat resistance, or aging resistance, meeting the demanding requirements of industrial protection and outdoor equipment.

In general, the main materials of sponge fabric determine its physical properties, chemical resistance, and application boundaries. When selecting materials, industries should comprehensively consider functional requirements, usage environment, and sustainability requirements, and achieve a balance between performance and cost through material optimization, thereby expanding its stable application space in multiple fields.
